Nursing Home Abuse

Abuse and neglect against the elderly are a national concern.  According to congressional reports, serious, physical, sexual and verbal abuse are numerous among the nation’s nursing homes. Common problems include untreated bedsores, inadequate medical care, malnutrition, dehydration, preventable accidents, and in adequate sanitation and hygiene.

Nursing homes and care facilities are meant to provide our loved ones with a safe place to live with dignity and medical attention.  Inattentive and poorly trained workers may fail to provide adequate care for them.  Our elderly should not suffer unexplained injuries, malnutrition, and especially not untimely death at the hands of their caregivers. Unfortunately, victims of nursing home abuse are often silent. When visiting your loved ones, it is important that you look for signs of abuse and neglect, such as:

  • falls
  • rapid weight loss
  • unexplained bruises
  • unsanitary living conditions
  • torn or bloody clothing
  • burns
  • infections
  • medication dosage errors
  • verbal, physical or sexual abuse
  • bedsores
  • broken bones
  • confusion
  • restraints
  • stolen property
  • dehydration
  • sudden agitation or withdrawal
  • clogged breathing tubes
  • inadequate staffing
  • malnutrition
  • death
